hello lovers,

how are things? well, last night, i was online, i'm always online, and i randomly discovered my film "Jesus Coyote TeeVee" had it's Manitoba Premiere screening in Winnipeg at the Winnipeg Aboriginal Film Festival! woot!

i've been trying to get a film in there for years! and to finally get one screened there was awesome news!

except, it was back in November of last year, haha, but still i'm stoked it made the cut, so to speak!

even better, i contacted them this morning, and within 10 minutes i received a response! AMAZING! i thought it would be weeks before i heard anything, and apparently, the film was well received! yay! so, thanks WAFF, keep kicking ass!

so, what does that mean? perseverance pays off! keep making art and films and whatever you do as an artist every single day! now, if only i could get into the dreamspeaker festival in edmonton, i think my work is too intense or scary for them though! haha!

Ronald Reagan had this trickle down theory on economics, in that if they gave the rich and top 1% massive tax breaks, the wealth would "trickle down" via spending and investment in the american economy.

in other words, total bullshit.

so, there was this image i found online that inspired my new work.

ahhh, i need to lighten up, relax, not think soooooooooooo much, or, shut the fcuk up and make more art and write and do what i'm good at, instead of navel gazing. if that was something i could do for more than 10 minutes.

let's face it, i feel isolated, you feel isolated, we all feel isolated. but what are we really going to do about it?

do you live in a community where ART is seen as a hobby, past time or what have ye?

or, are you surrounded by people who make a living at art and are actively pursuing a career in art, without the usual backstabbing douchebaggery involved in the waaaaay too dramatic art world?

sigh, i guess i'm looking for shangri-la really.

in the meantime, i actually feel pretty fcukin' good and am actively writing and making new art and shutting my fcuking mouth.

finally getting over the pneumonia that has plagued me the past couple months. the last time i went to the doctor, last week, i was prescribed some inhalers, and they are working miracles. my lungs are clearing up, and i'm feeling much better. finally turning the corner on other things too, hope all is well in your world.

here's a new work, it's something i've been working on. it has to do with my illness, and length of time i was ill. but there are other things i'm doing too. some new writing, and hopefully a new film.

to pass the time, i'm watching the series "dexter" finally, after people have been ranting and raving about it for years. so far, so good, it's actually pretty good. i'm rarely fast-forwarding it, usually, i find that a series gets boring and i fast forward through them. nice. well, i've got to go, here's the new work and such.

hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

i hope you are well, and life is treating you just as well. things are going a better over in my camp, i finished some obligations i had made last year, and was looking forward to doing. now i'm settling in for a nice bit writing and so on. it is serious business. i remember one day i came home from a reading, and one of my family members went, "So, how did your little thing go?" whilst waving their fingers in the air as they said "little thing" like it was superfluous and meant nothing. guh.

that pisses me off so much, and i replied, "That "little thing" and repeated the action in their face, paid my rent this month and nearly a 100 people showed up." Thankfully, they shut up, and that was it, but you'd think after 20 years of doing this, and the past several years doing it professionally, as in, no safety net, no E.I. or swellfare, just making my way as i go along, you'd think they'd get it? i make my own way, people support and believe in what i'm doing, and it's on my own terms. every now and then someone in my family will say, "Why don't you collect E.I.?" or "Go on welfare?" Can you believe it? I probably make more than they do, but that's our secret, okay lovers?

so, anyway, i did a couple workshops this week, and i look back on the photos, and what i've learned afterwards, is how one of the schools i went to this week, was 98% First Nations, even though it was a public school. then i went to another community, that was 99% non-Native and learned that non-Native kids from one community get driven by bus every day an hour and a 10 minutes just so they can go to a school that's mainly non-Native. harsh. that's segregation. racism. colonialism. fcuking stupid.

it just goes to show, nothing has fcuking changed in our primitive governmental, institutionalized racism based system. this news actually made me sad, because the kids at the 98% First Nations school were awesome, they were great kids, and inspired me because these little gaffers were already doing digital art and making films and they were as young as grade 4 ! how inspiring! then i found a video on a camera from one of the schools that showed a couple non-Native kids jumping around with handdrums going "Hyah Hyah Hyah!" and laughing about us. that really fcuking hurt. it made me livid. it burned my eyes.

despite co-existing for more than a century in BC, we're still made fun of by the dominant society. marginalized, excluded, and nearly forgotten except for as a pain in the ass. fcuk you colonial canada. fcuk you.

anyways, i got a photo forwarded to me from the workshops, and i'll always remember those great kids and the awesome Teachers and Administrators that were working hard to make a difference. i thought i'd post it, and you could see how technology brought together 3 classes in three different towns for a presentation i did on digital art, native art, and being a native artist in todays world.

then, after i saw that video, and thought about that workshop, i realized how important it must have been for those First Nations kids to see someone like myself doing what i'm doing, talking in our language, writing in our language, making films in our language, art in our language and so on. i hope it inspired them as much as i was amazed and inspired by them and their bravery.

anyways, back to writing, i've got a new book to work on, and creative energy to burn, and i'm gonna make it burn bright.

ahhhhhh the new years is well upon us, and over the years, i've learned a thing or two.

everyone loves to see someone crash and burn.....it's messed up, it's human nature, and people do enjoy it. then again, everyone loves to see the comeback kid, someone to return to a former glory, once fallen.
since i'm too old to be a kid, i'll say king, even though i'm not. haha!

but, i know i've only got so many more opportunities, and even less to people who care! haha again!

so, with that, i'm working on a new book of poetry and non-fiction, as well as some new art/films and songs. i knew this year would kick ass, and i'm determined to make certain it does.

SO, i'm also really into a new show called is "Game of THrones." some friends of mine came over for a few days, and we had a "game of thrones: season 1" marathon......it is such a good series. as well, i been watching "Master and Commander: Far Side of the World." which is waaaay better than i thought it would be. the people who made that film did their research and homework. 2 great entertainment finds in one week!

as well, i've been watching the "Ali G Show" and holy crap, it's a funny show, i haven't seen it for awhile, so it's crude, funny and unbelievable. My favourite stuff is when he goes to the deep southern les Etats Unis, and we see the "proper and formal" side of racism and propriety of america.

one other great find i had this past week, is the book by Shaun Tan, "Lost and Found."

it is a beautifully illustrated book of three short stories. i highly recommend it. the anecdote i have regarding it, is i saw it before christmas this past year, and in one of those foolish moments, put it back, and didn't purchase it. i also didn't write down the author or book title. after the holidays, a couple weeks later, i went back to find the book, and it was of course, gone.

i searched high and low, and could not find it. it was a bummer. i gave up.

then, this past weekend, i was at the bookstore again with my kids, and checked the place where it was, and lo and behold, the book was there. i bought it. brought it home, read it, and loved it.

it's in the kids books section of bookstores, but it's totally meant for adults. it's content is deep and cerebral. check it out, you will likely dig it.

i hope you have recovered from new years eve! i have at last and all is well. as i said previously, there are many projects on the go, and one is the 9 deadly sins of Jesus Coyote. they will be made into films. this is the first one, but it's a bit spicy, and i don't give a fuck. if you don't like it, fine, but don't censor me or my art. and this is a big picture project, which i cannot tell you any more than you need to know.

like i said, i've suddenly got a shit ton of projects and ideas on the go, and i almost hate sleeping because i'm not being productive when i sleep. haha!

it's sort of a gamble, what i'm doing, betting the show and everything in my life on the potential lie of success, instead of planning for it proper. sigh. but, i'm now on the path i've chosen, and at this point, all i can do is give'r.

just back from east van, or as some call it, "yeast van," which is somewhat derogatory as i have come to love east van, it's really one of my favourite places in canada. at least, urban places, it's up there. main street and commercial street, east broadway, those are some dope streets with great comic shops, shirt and skate shops, bone rattle music, lucky comics, mintage: vintage clothes, cafes, venues, art galleries, and the like, it's a cultural hotspot.

i don't think i appreciated it before, now i am starting to really love it. and i designed a skull shirt to show my love of East Van.

it needs some work, but it was quick and dirty to do. just the way i like it.

anyways, vancity has been giving to me for years, and i'm stoked to have shows there, and read there, and scream and rant and rave there. it's great. working on new art and projects all the time lovers, stay tuned,

happy new years friends, fans, foe and lovers,

i spent the past week in Vancity, as i've had a show at the UNIT/PITT gallery in 15 East Pender, as well a book launch in conjunction with the show. my good friend Cease Wyss curated the show at the gallery, and was a super awesome host, taking me around the city, showing me cool art and giving me a annotated sense of the history of vancity. it's been awesome, got to spend more time on the rez in North Van, and check out the community garden she's got going on on her reserve.

so, it's been a great week for my headspace and the show was great fun, the launch went super, a lot of people made it, and i also read at Cafe De Soleil on commercial drive with my good friend Anthony Metvier, who added a performance art element to his reading by destroying his book at the end of it. haha, it was awesome.

well, a lot of people really helped out, and i'd like to thank Keith Higgens at the UNIT/PITT Gallery, Cease Wyss for curating it, my friends many who made it to the launch and were great sports and good to see, as well as everyone else who made it to the show!

so, here's the video i just finished, it's not really finished, but for this week, it's finished.....i'm certain i'll peck at it all week into the new year, tweaking it and trying to make sure it's as best as i can do.

it represent 3 years of my life creatively, and the last 3 decades dealing with the non-native people of canada.

if at times you twinge and feel shitty, about a joke you heard about native people and didn't have the guts, balls, or ovaries to say something, or you yourself said something stupid, colonial and ignorant, or you have that drunk uncle who's a racist prick, or in high school you bugged the native kid, or kids, or didn't stand up for someone indian when you had the chance.

i want you to suck it up. wallow in it. feel it. that post-colonial guilt. enjoy it. savour it. bake at 350 degree without rotating and stuff it in the deepest, darkest corners of your, uhm psyche.

this short film is dedicated to canada and all my relations,

the holidays are upon us, we're half way there, christmas is behind us, new years ahead, and another 365 days to get it right.

i've got a ton of art in the works right now, and i just finished my installation video for my show in vancity, and i feel it is the culmination of nearly 3 years of struggling to creatively express my disdain, delight and disgust with the Apology from Stephen Harper on behalf of the Government of Canada and it's lumpen proletariat. oooh, did that sound snobby? like i give a shit, because i've toured across this country more than 12 times in the past couple years since the Apology and in NDN country, it had the significance of time standing still. our world stopped that day, and we gathered in band halls, kitchens, living rooms, class rooms, offices, and conference halls to watch what i'm sure each and everyone one of us was thinking; that we'd never hear an apology in our lifetime.

in the rest of the country, it had the cultural importance and resonance of a wet fart. it was a gamble, it came, it went, left a bit of a mess, and that was about it. i've lectured at high schools, galleries, universities, coffee houses, theatres, festivals and just about everywhere else you can think of, and other than the teachers, administrators, organizers, and NDN students, NO ONE HAS EVEN HEARD OF THE APOLOGY. what a bunch of dumbasses in this country. yeah, i hope you feel guilty, wallow in that post-colonial guilt, because every day, every other day, every week of my life, i've had to justify and stand up to the ugly, ignorant Canadian about First Nations rights, land and title.

"yes we pay taxes, no my schooling wasn't free, i don't have free land, or a house, i didn't get a hundred grand when i turned 19 from the government, and on and on," you stupid, ignorant racist canadian swine.

oooh, my apologies if i sound jaded, bitter and harsh, but you try justifying yourself as often as i described for nearly 30 years to canadians, who have the nerve to trash talk NDN's. it gets pretty damn tiring. and you have to stand up and say something, because silence is justification, and justification is acceptance, and that is just ignorant.

anyway, the Apology, it happened, it was heavy, it was emotional, i cried, everyone around me cried, it felt like a powerful victory in the slow, but steady slog to regain our rights and title in this country that was totally stolen from us. for nothing, look around you canada, the middle class, and the wealthy elite, none of you wouldn't have a damn thing if it weren't for the land, the resources, the minerals and the oil you extract from this country you stole. period.

there is no middle class in NDN country, only the poor and the wealthy elite who are administrators and the like, some no more than white collar criminals. there is a thin, very thin veil of a blue collar working class, but it is not like the rest of canada.

think about it, until 1961, we couldn't vote, couldn't leave the reserve without permission, couldn't speak our languages, couldn't practice our ceremonies or other cultural activities, couldn't work off reserve, couldn't sell whatever we could grow on our reserves to white people, couldn't own farm equipment, couldn't go to anything but residential schools, and to top it off, since 1870, First Nations children were stolen from their parents at the age of 6 until 16, forced to move far away from their families to attend Residential schools, to "kill the Indian in the child," and on and on.

and white people have the gaul to talk shit about us.

yeesh.

anyways, i'll post my video later this week, it kicks ass.

One is a reworked version of a film i did 2 years ago, and recently rediscovered it. it's a sad video, and i wasn't in a good space, but nonetheless, i'm happy to have found it.

in fact, it's been weird lately, and at the end of the video, there's a girl shuffling away, i recently ran into her again, and she's alive and well, and looking good. i wrote about here in my book "stone the crow" it's on page 43.

re: the apology series.

greetings friends, fans, foe and lovers,

here are four new works based on the apology by stephen harper to the first nations, inuit and metis people of canada. they are 11 x 17 in diameter, and i'm making them available to institutions, educational facilities and organizations as a means furthering the education about the Residential schools and the importance and significance of the Apology.

After traveling across the country the past few years giving lectures and talks about aboriginal art, and it's frightening how little impact it made in this country, so i figured creating a series of art might be able to help make people aware of it. i always say, born a native, born an activist. because, for the rest of your life, you have to justify your existence to the rest of canada.

the image above, is based on the photo of St. George's Residential school in Lytton, BC.

it burnt to the ground because of arson. my mother and father both went there and were

never the same. i think they never left in some ways.

hello lovers,

it's been a week or so, sigh, never enough time and best laid plans and all that.....i've got 6 new works on the go. yes dear fan, foe, friend and the like. in my daily rummaging on the internet i found some cool art, and searching for inspiration. also, been doing some work on my technique. dave mckean was doing stuff 16 years ago on a mac i can't figure out today.

imagine the nervousness he must have felt in rendering files. get the art prepared, save it, and then hit render and wait until morning to see how it looked or if it crashed. nowadays, i wait 30 seconds i get impatient. technology spins us round and round, but is anything improving?

yes, no, maybe. haha.

well, i've got some work to do, hope you are ready for the holidays, and all is well in your world.

born a native in canada means you are born an activist whether or not you're willing to accept it, is another question. as an artist, i believe that i have an opportunity to kick in the door of oppression, and expose light and injustice into darkness and darker times. there's a lot of talk about what's going on in Attawapiskat, northern ontario. it's a native village, that's gotten national attention recently, but it's no different from a lot of reserves in canada. people don't understand an Indian Reservation was created to conveniently put us out of sight and out of the picture. we weren't allowed to leave without the authorization of the Indian agent. we couldn't own vehicles, or sell crops or anything to white people. we couldn't buy farm equipment. we couldn't get an education besides residential schools. we couldn't work off reserve. we couldn't vote. basically, we had no rights and were prisoners on our own land. and white people dare to bitch about us? yeesh. talk about official and collective denial.

here's a couple images of Attawapiskat reserve and the housing crisis they face, ironically, the de beers corporation have a diamond mine 90 km away. how bittersweet.

talk about remote living? i bet everything starts at $20 in a place like this.

so, i'm sick at home with pneumonia, want to go out, know that if i do, it could get worse. feeling about 6 out of 10, like i might have mentioned earlier, i felt like 0 on the weekend.

anyways, listening to "Alexisonfire" album "Old Crowes and Young Cardinals," and love it!

inspired to do some skate art, which i want to have my own skate decks and apparel, but also a "jesus coyote" gambling kit. you know, deck of cards, table, chips, mugs and the like.

in the meantime, i've worked on these mock ups this afternoon of some deck ideas. I mean, the options are limitless, coz the colours of my art can be manipulated soooooooo easily!!! and endlessly!!

wait, didn't i just say that, see, i'm not all there yet. ugh.

here's a card, i'm working on a deck, it'll be a long haul project. ace of spades "jesus coyote" style. i reckon a character, especially a hybrid character like "jesus coyote" would be a gambler, a bit of a carouser, and a bit dangerous. being a messiah and a trickster would do that to you. so, it only seems natural he'd have his own deck of cards for games of chance! haha!

i'll be posting them time to time throughout 2012. it's challenging maintaining focus and drive, it's the end of a tough year, and i want it to end quickly. sorting through things, next year will kick ass come hell or high water.

well, i gotta go, more art to do, i sort of feel i'm cheating if i don't bust my ass all day, every day doing art since i sacrificed everything to get here. be careful what you wish for kids, coz sometimes when you get it, you realize what you gave to get there.

ps: still feeling sick from pneumonia, it really kicked my ass. part of the downtime, i'm watching lots of movies. i need to be inspired. one of the films i'm watching is bruce mcdonald's classic "hard core logo," and it's one of my faves. i love the scene when they all drop acid at bucky haight's place, trip balls and sacrifice a goat. epic! makes me laugh out loud every time. i love it, pipefitter the next day "i killed a fcuking goat!?" with this bewildered look in his eye, followed by billy talent saying to him, "pipe, we all drank it's blood!" haha, solid acting, production and directing.

I can't wait to see Hard Core Logo II woot!

how goes it in your world? i've been sick as hell, went to the emergency room last thursday, difficulty breathing, blah blah. turns out i've got pneumonia, they did x-rays, the doctor showed me where the gross stuff was accumulating in my lungs. Been on anti-biotics since, and tripped out hard on this stuff called "emtec" which was totally wicked. I spent the past 4 days in a weird limbo state, catatonic, brutal stuff.

Anyways, i managed to crank this one "Jesus Coyote" image, and am surprised at howmuch i got done even though i was sick. hell, i worked until last monday. did a poetry reading last wednesday. i'm bored as hell, but weak right now, hard to move and walk around much without running out of breath. you know, i need to get outta here, in some ways, an escape. i dunno. got work next week, make some cash, get ready for the holidays. i dunno, i'm bored in this town, i feel i ain't got no peers, or none to hang out with, and i ain't interested in any relationships with the fairer sex! haha! anyways, blah blah blah, enjoy the art.

had an interesting night last night, went to a reading/music/art event last night here in Kamloops. It was part of the John Freemont Smith building downtown, which is 100 years old. Ashok Mathur was the host, Trefor Smith played guitar and sang, Cecily Nicholson read from a chapbook she wrote during a day residency for the celebration, and I read at the "Art We Are" open mic night.

Actually Paul Liddy and I both read from our upcoming chapbook "No Soul Cellphone" and "A Moon Made of Copper." It was great fun, I read three new poems and then went upstairs to the art event. These events are rare and deserve to be attended because if we don't go out and support live events, they will not happen.

Anyways, have some new art to post, and a lot on my mind these days, the bills, the rent, the usual. I'm really wondering what I'm doing in this town, so, i've got to figure that out. What I really want to do is just hit the road, play live, read live and get paid for it. haha. dream job right? Well, i've got to go, enjoy the new art and keep you posted. The new "Black Keys" album is coming out, "el camino," is coming out and i look forward to it.

I've been trying to record them in ambient places, like field recordings from the early 1920's. i went to fields, parks, parking garages, alleys and other weird spots. Most of these tracks were done at night, and there was always a junkie or two that came and checked out what was going on. It was kind of strange, especially the song, "you must be high," haha!

should be interesting to see how the songs turn out!

okay, so the new artwork is about obviously, Les Etats Unis!

yay!

Actually, it represents the blood on canada's hands for plundering an entire country for free. the $1000 bill represent unpaid taxes to the original people who live here for thousands of years. The flag is tattered, spattered and worn, just like the people of canada. The aboriginal people are better left dead, or in museums, and the culture is on fire, coming back to life. Or something like that, you decide.

I have a couple things coming up soon, the 2012 pictoprophecies will be launching in Penticton, BC this coming weekend, I've got an image in it, as well as an installation projection featured in the exhibition as well. It will be traveling to Kelowna in February 2012 at the Alternator Centre, and Kamloops at the Arnica Centre in summer 2012.

The theme of the Picto Prophecies, is roughly, reinterpreting the past for the future, mainly the some 120 pictograph sites that are not protected at all by Heritage Canada, asses, and should be because they document the presence of the First Nations people of the Interior of BC.

how are you? how have things been lately? things are well on my end, a little slow in some ways, in others very busy. life is good, what can i say?

i'm back at art again, and it feels really awesome to be doing it once more. i even read at a local poetry open mic night! that was great, it has been a long time to have read at such an event, and, to see people reading for the love it was fantastic. i'll be going back every two weeks for it, now i'm on the prowl for an open mic jam night, i've recorded about 25 new songs the past couple months, and next year is going to kick ass.

being an artist, a "professional" artist is rewarding, sometimes boom and bust, but the time, or freedom i have is incredible. i've been trying to get out of my house more often because too much time in the mancave gets a little stale, a little crazy, so human interaction is the cure to the insanity that inevitably come with time away from everyone.

well, i've got a show coming up soon with the Ullus Collective, and i'll keep you posted on the details.

well, here we are, the 600th blog post. never thought i'd be here, never thought this far ahead before. what's going on in my life on this milestone? i'm listening to an album i bought 12 years ago and still digging it, blur's album "13" and just sort of rediscovered it quite recently. a lot of things have happened in that time, and i've stumbled, staggered, fell down and gotten back up many times.

i'm a survivor. i have to keep moving on, and certain albums, books, artwork, films and other cultural things weave in and out of my life for reasons often unknown. how this album came into my possession is kind of a mystery, i think i originally bought it at the future shop in aberdeen mall here in town, because i like the production william orbit did on it. that year, i also go pj harvey's "is this desire" and tom waits "beautiful maladies" a best of compilation from island records. don't remember much more than that from that era really. i went through a lot of hell for a couple years with women. lost it all. haven't really been the same since i think, haha!

a late bloomer for sure, i spent too many years fucking around, and i don't know if i'm paying for it, have paid for it, or what's coming down for sure.

anyways, here's something i worked on for a while, not sure if i like it entirely, but it felt good to work on, and i don't know if its done or not, but whatever, i've got stuff to do, hope you dig it, going to work on a NDN version of "paranormal activity" in the next couple weeks, should be hilarious. want to do some funny stuff in film for awhile. too serious, ain't fun.

success, what does it mean?

i dunno, i mean, there is never any sort of feeling that you've fucken "arrived" at successes and fates doorway, it's just a nod of the head and a continual charge forward towards fucken oblivion, really.

people couldn't fucken care less, because they're wrapped up in they're own oblivion. So, what does that mean? Well, i guess that means, if you're at the stage where you're getting paid to do what you love to do creatively, instead of swinging a hammer, crankin' a wrench, diggin' a hole, smashing a cash register full of cash that ain't yours, hearing the clang of dishes, or generally some douchebag yellin' over your volume about what a shite job you are doing, then i guess you ain't fully realizing what you're potential is as a human being.

i've never, ever had that feeling that i've arrived, no, that's a fucken lie, when i got my first book deal back in 2005, when my life changed and i only look back in trepidation, i will never forget climbing the top of a mountain and playing this song by the datsuns........ever since then, it's been hell, but a hell i fight for every day.....

it was hazy daze on my mind ever since then, but it felt good to get that deal, to get that far, when most of my life i was told i'd never succeed and i'd be a failure. fuck them, those evil twats that said that, coz i see them now, and they're life hasn't changed, and my life continues to evolve, to grow, to see, to realize many things.

once was a failure, now seen ten times, twenty times, hell, a hundred times, a thousand times more than what i thought i would and anyone else would ever see, little wonder, my first book in 2005 was a memoir.

i remember reading on tour with all these geezers, who'd say to me, what gall i had writing a memoir in my early 30's. haha, i'd already lived 10 or 20 times they're lives, once they heard my stories, they shut the hell up....

now, i slog on, and move forward, because all the momentum carries me towards a future i want, and a future we'll all realize......

i'm down at Galiano Island right now, working at the Gulf Islands Film and Television School....it's my 3 year being here as a mentor and i love it and look forward to it every year. This place has a vibe, the island, the school, the people here, and it's not to be missed if you ever get the chance to get here, do it! What I do is mentor First Nations youth during their Aboriginal Film Intensive, which is 2 weeks every Fall, but I also believe they do a Summer course as well, you should totally check it out.

We're in the middle of scriptwriting right now, and will begin production today and for the next several days, and editing next week. It's great, the only distraction is the beauty of the island, which is immense.

a friend of mine remarked that reading my blog that it seemed like hard times, but real times, and yes, i would have to agree. but it's not as bad as it seems, even during dry spells such as this, and really, i'm a working class artist, so what do i expect? haha! limo's and caviar? that'd be nice, but it ain't my reality right now! and despite being broke ass right now, i'm actually feeling pretty good. living a healthier lifestyle these days, getting exercise, quit smoking, quit drinking, don't do drugs, so life is fairly clean right now. my only weakness is deep fried peanut butter sandwiches at midnight, but shhh.....(kidding, that'd be a quick route to the grave!!)

anyways, one thing i've been thinking about, is that during these stretches between cheques, is wondering why i've got ideas galore when i'm on the road, i'll do this, and that, and the other thing, but as soon as i get back to kamloops, it's oblivion and all my dreams sort of crumble and fade away. when i'm away, i feel hope, but when i get back home, i'm faced with some reality i can't escape. or a nightmare i can't escape. i'll sort it out though, don't worry lovers.

hell, on days like that, i at least have a wealth of images and footage i've shot while traveling, that get me through these lean times, reminding me it won't last forever.

so, on that note, i'd like to say i'm heading back on the road for a couple weeks down to the Gulf Islands Film and Television School to mentor during the Aboriginal Media Intensive. It's my 3rd year in a row doing this gig, and it's got to be one of my favourites, because Galiano Island is like no other, a real beautiful place, and i get to work with Aboriginal youth from all over BC and this year, i heard from NWT!

there are lot of things going on, i'm actually finally working on a decent album of new roots metal type songs, heavy but with a groove, and there are nice acoustic flourishes, as well as cool beats and ambient noise happening......i was supposed to go Toronto after i was done at the Gulf Islands Film School, but i figured no, it just ain't the time, even though i would have been at the ImagineNative film festival, they're screening my "Jesus Coyote TeeVee," film, which would have been cool to see the crowd's reaction to that fucken film, but i don't have the cash for one, and i'll get there when the time is right. i spent a lot of time in Toronto last year, and don't mind not being there much this year. but next year i'll kick it's ass. you'll see.

in the meantime, check out the vids, and think about something positive to get you through the dark days of fall and winter,

Greetings friends, fans, lovers, foe and assorted nuts,

I love Autumn, it's a beautiful season, smoky, darker earlier, cool mornings, and great scary movies come out! So, in that spirit, below is a All Hallow's Eve image i have been trying to get done all week, but i've been sick, tormented and busy with other things. namely, trying to figure out how to get 16 demo's of songs off of my so called "smartphone" onto a mac, and into logic software to make some skeleton tracks. Success!!

and i've been listening to the new Mastodon album, i love the art, a guy named J Fosik, and he creates the art piece by piece, cut out with a fancy scroll saw or something. unbelievable amount of work, and talk about dedication to your craft? wow!

anyways, i've been continuing to toil away in relative obscurity, vexed and exhausted by empty promises from people promising the world, but able to schlepp it off and shrug when things don't work out, or the money doesn't come through, because it was no sweat off their back. It just leaves me fucking scrambling to make rent, food and bills, plus taking care of my kids. Speaking of bills, i haven't paid my phone bill in about 3 months, and i gotta get new Autumn clothes for my kids, so if you've seen some art you like, contact me!! haha! no, for real, i gots bills to pay!

and i can't pay them in hugs or marshmellows!

well, below is my new work, and some things that made me laugh my ass off this past week, it's been a struggle keeping my neck above the water financially, but i'm sure that'll change in the new year, it's just getting there that's tough work! it features Aleister Crowley, once thought to be the wickedest man alive, but he died alone, poor and with various STD's.......haha! bummer!

Below, as an artist for most of my adult life, i still am frustrated that i am a 20 year plus "emerging artist" and so the grants i can apply for are skint, it's a glass ceiling, which means, it's challenging to get ahead in this business, and don't think it's not a business boys and girls, it is a ruthless fucking business, where the white-collar vipers would use your name, your art, your status in an instant, and fuck you over, kill you and leave you for dead if they thought they could get ahead of your fetid, rotting corpse for one shining moment. yep, it's ruthless.

Trust only a contract, once it's signed, but get in and out as fast as possible, the longer you stay, the more you pay, and trust your instincts, if it seems sketchy, or unlikely to happen, then it probably is a waste of fucking time. I'm about ready to cocoon up for the winter, and spend it creating new work, and slogging it out in construction or whatever i can, just so i can regain my independence. focus kids, focus!

Check the tight work of J Fosik in a recent issue of, you guessed it, Hi-Fructose!

In the meantime boys and girls, keep on rocking in the whatever world. and keep getting out there, and reading stuff, seeing stuff, listening to stuff, and such, it's a big beautiful world out there......

here's another new work i've been chipping away at lately, things are getting a bit hectic, just wrapping up 65 grand in grant writing proposals, if i get one or two grants, that would be smashing, i need to start exploring new directions in my film and art, music and writing too.....i need to sit and record a proper album of new stuff.

anyways, i'm back at construction, i like it, not a bit of drama, just laughs and hard work, actually, not even that hard, but i ain't getting any younger, so you won't hear me complaining! plus, i'm working with a good crew, and that makes all the difference. it's been over five years since i've done this, so we'll see how long this old coyote lasts, if i can give'r until xmas, i'm laughing.

how goes it? i'm well, sort of, heading back to work in construction for awhile, need to catch up on some bills post haste, and i need a break from the art world. people want to do things, and have ideas or promises, but those things do not pay rent or bills. at least, not in the immediate.

been thinking about the future, what does it hold? how long can i keep doing this? i need to get myself a house, and some money saved for the future. today in line at a grocery store, i watched several elderly people paying for their groceries, and i noticed how they were super precise about their purchases. it reminded me that i too might be fortunate enough to get old, but i should begin socking some money away.

who is going to look after me? who will be there for me? how will i retire? these are questions i'm asking myself more and more lately.

anyways, until i figure out some concrete plans, i'll keep slogging away at artwork and everything else until i hatch a plan.

enjoy this new work, it's very layered and hypnotic, i can't wait to print it. and is very much about the upcoming prophetic 2012.

hell-o friends, fans, lovers, ex's and foe,

haven't been posting much i've realized, computer problems, and i've been on the road for a month or so. time passes quickly when traveling, but i will get back at it shortly, once i get my 'puter fixed up.

what can i say, being an artist is a tough slog, because you're never just an "artist."

you've gotta be a PR person, constantly carrying the flag into battle and schmoozing up new gigs or clients, you've got to be a manager, booking gigs and arranging transportation and accommodations, as well as a researcher, delving into new technology and techniques, while simultaneously working to keep you chops up in an ever competitive world, and personal assistant, taking care of all the little tasks that need to be done to keep your ship running smoothly. it's endless and exhausting, and when you're not on the road, you ain't making a living, so you're constantly struggling against two worlds, the home world and the road world, which are impossibly different places to be at both times.

one lifestyle is domestic, take out the trash, do the dishes, pick up after the kids, banking, get in line for groceries, while the other lifestyle is a hectic, rock 'n' roll, mish mass of panic, and what i call the "hurry up and wait," syndrome at venues, galleries, theatres, hotel lobby's, hotel rooms, cabs, airport skybars, and of course, there's quite a lot of imbibing of spirits to pass the time in between it all. So, in getting home, there needs to be a little bit of 'downtime' to change gears and adjust to being a civilian again, instead of a frontline foot soldier in the trenches of the art, music, literary, and film world where people are throwing "culture bombs" at you in attempts to make you prove your worth, or send you back to relative obscurity and slavery.

myself, i've been on the road a good three years solid, traveling pretty much consistently across canada and a few forays into the states doing what i love doing, making art, or films, or music or writing. i haven't had much time to reflect on it, because when you're in the 'now' you have no time to look back on things, goals, accomplishments, missed ships and the like. but lately, i've been doing something a bit different, and that is abstaining from my good friend alcohol, and it's been treating me right. on the road, you can develop a voracious appetite for good spirits for a variety of reasons: missing home, missing friends or family, the love of a good time, and so on. it isn't a bad thing, i think it helps keep you sane and decompresses the mind from a high stress lifestyle in a lot of ways, but sometimes, differentiating between a "good time" on the road and a "good time" at home can be very, very different things. i guess what i'm saying is i'm slowing down and it's a good thing, because i was going very hard traveling and living for a few years, and i realize i am mortal, and have a multitude of responsibilities that i must take care of, dangling modifiers aside.

i quite like this new lifestyle i'm adjust to, it's not the home life, but tee-totaling it, because i'm up early in the morning now, not feeling like death warmed over, and i can feel a nice clarity coming out of a fog of frantic traveling. As well, for some reason, I’ve got all this damn energy, so I’ve been hiking a lot and trying to figure out what to do with myself while I my computer gently weeps in a mac repair lab…….well, here are some photos from the road....enjoy......(i should do a travel blog as well!)

Hello friends, fans, lovers, foe and the like,

so, i just booked my flights for montreal, i'll be there in the first week of august, followed by a quick trip back to the west coast for a reading at the sunshine coast festival of the written arts on august 6th!

money, it's a funny thing, when you've got it, you feel good, at least i do, and when you don't you worry about when you're going to get it next. it's kind of like a dysfunctional relationship with a lover. of which, i've had my share.

plus, there's other baggage associated with money, like ways to earn it! haha! but i know when i'm between gigs or contracts, my family and friends start in on me like predatory monsters, "when are you going to get a job?" or "why don't you get your Master's degree and teach art, you love it so much?" usually, i want to tell them to go fuck themselves, and that not everyone needs to follow the same path, that some of us like traveling down a road that is infinitely wide and without direction. "but you've got kids!" they always retort, and yeah, i worry about providing for them, and their future as well as mine. but you know what? i've invested so much fucking time, effort and energy onto the path, the road that i am on now, so i figure i've got to push it as far as i possibly can before i give in and "get a job" just like everyone else.

five years ago, when i was swinging a hammer for a living, it was hard work, and physically demanding on my body. i'm not a spring chicken anymore, and when i get hurt, it actually takes time to heal. i make way more now doing what i do, and am finally slowing down my wild ways, because i know i've got to survive at least another twenty years before i go in for the next part of the journey in this life and death cycle.

I made this artwork tonight in my lonely little motel room in penticton, while listening to Mastodon's albums "Blood Mountain" and "Leviathan."

NDN country needs some fucking heavy metal, yeah, the 3 or 4 famous NDN boys can play the blues, but i want some sludgy fucking riffs and pounding fucking drums and screaming vocals. Something nice and heavy, while I listen to the people outside partying on the patio, muscle cars roared up the street, some really crappy hip hop played, I traveled elsewhere listening to some heavy FUCKING METAL.

Anyway, the whole idea about this latest series is about life and death, and the spirit world. or whatever.

The music made me want to get way better at guitar, and find some musicians that would be into it. In kamloops i've never really had luck jamming with other people, because they can't see past their reality that whatever we create will ever be anything more than just jamming. But when i go to other major cities, i find a groove instantly with other musicians and jam like mad!

Musically and creatively my time will come, at least, that's the hope/dream right? ha ha!

I've been playing guitar for over 20 years, and have had peaks and valleys in my technical abilities, and I don't plan on stopping, it'll just take time finding the right people to create heavy/weird music with I guess.

In the meantime lovers, I'll be thinking of you often,

my apologies on not posting for some time, or sporadically at best......been going through a transitional period in life, spent a couple years solid on the road, then six months in another city, and i think maybe i've finally figured out what i'm supposed to be doing.

in some ways i've lost who i was, and in some ways i've found who i am. weird eh?

ANYWAYS, i've finished a couple new films, been working on another one i started back in Regina, Saskatchewan last year when i was doing a residency at Sakewewak artists collective. It's spooky and cool.

I've been kinda busy navel gazing, trying to figure things out, and not doing much else........

but in between staring at my shoes and films, i've been talking with a dude named derek about integrity. or rather, he's been helping me find mine. it's been interesting, and there have been some good conversations come out of it. i've been on a wayward path for a while, or just kinda crazy, wandering without direction. i haven't found god or anything like that, but i have started to come full circle. i'm going back home, because there are things i need to take care of, family matters, i've been away for some time and i've missed many birthdays and holidays and such. the little people in my life need me to be there and so i feel i'm making the right decisions and just have to go with it.

i think these are interesting songs because they were recorded at a strange, transformative time in my life.....plus it was the 500 year anniversary of Columbus and all that insanity......i also discovered a booked call "INdigEna" based on the catalogue from a show at the National Gallery of Canada on new art from First Nations artists.......

these are artists who became huge influences on my life, carl beam, jane ash poitras, jim logan and more......

a milestone time in my life, and the music that i recorded in that era is something i'll probably never be able to recreate again.....

here's an old film i found amidst a stack of old storage drives.......geez, i think this is about seven years old?

anyway, dig it and i'll be back soon with some new art or something......

this just some of a lot of touring, when i was on my own and younger and greener than now......old, jaded fart.........haha! kidding!

my first national tours as a solo artist, filmmaker, author and some time musician......when the gig or someone called for it.......i remember the "e-meter" guy was in toronto at the scientology building on yonge street......ten or twelve story building full of people being broken down into little bits and being built in the image of L. Ron Hubbard. nutbar. whatever.

last fall some time, i did a tremendous amount of flying back and forth across the country, and invariably, i got to sit beside a lot of people, some cool, some not, some fun, some weird, and sometimes, airline pilots......who i asked how often do they fly, and then they told me the safe, allowable amount of time you should fly, compared to what i was doing, because apparently when you spend about 15 days in the sky a month, you are exposed to more radiation than normal, you should stay on the ground for a while. this means it is not safe. and plus, stewards and stewardesses begin to remember you, and give you that look and say to you, "oh, you again....." causing you to cringe and try to recall what the hell you did 40,000 feet above the ground at a skybar.........or what have ye.....

i mean, this was at a time when i spending about 40 hours a week on a jet going to places.......it's okay if i never have any more kids, coz i've got five, at least, so what the hell....?

and i still fall under the emerging artist category for grants! ha ha!

anyway, much love, i miss you lots and will write many love letters while we wait to see one another,

i made this short film a few years ago, jeez, i think it was in imovie, and anyway, i flickered around with it and thought i'd upload it for your perusal.......this seems like a lifetime ago......i remember many of those beautiful moments like they were yesterday......alas, they are not.

hello friends, fans, lovers, and foe,

here's a piece i've been chipping away at for a while.......this is by no means complete, as i plan on adding text........also, i haven't been feeling tops lately, under the weather a bit......

hope this lovely art update finds you well and all that......the image below contains an old photo of what some say is my great grandfather.......this is up for debate, but if it is, who has more right to it? myself to use in art as a direct descendent or the person who took this photo who is surely gone in the otherworld and this is an estate thing? art has so many pompous debates, that sometimes, it's ridiculous........almost like politics..........

also, i've been listening to some of the old back log of Constellation music's stuff, the first full length album by Frankie Sparo, called "wecome crummy mystics," and the Godspeed You! Black Emperor album "Yanqui UXO" both of which i discovered back in 2002 or 2003. i hosted a variety of radio shows at Thompson Rivers University the past decade, so i was always exposed to new music at the campus/community station......

Well, if it was in the year 2003, which i'm reasonably certain it was, that was a year of fires here in British Columbia, especially in the Southern Interior.......I had been working as a farm labourer for 2 or 3 years, and was basically fed up with where i was going in life.......which seemed to be nowhere quickly.......

my peers were succeeding, scoring book deals, and touring, and i felt the art climate was stagnant and boring as hell, and I was creatively frustrated.......and i remember bitching about the status quo while pulling weeds in this huge field, with the sun beating down, and the air thick with smoke from all the massive forest fires around us, the sound of helicopters in the air, and just hitting the wall so to speak.

and as i was complaining, the kids who was working with me, looked up at me, i'm not kidding, and said, "are you chris bose?"

ha ha, i nearly shat myself, and sheepishly said, "yeah, why?"

and he told me he had read my 'zines that i was publishing and read an interview that was published by the local university magazine the "omega." i was all conspiracy theory and shit, bring down the man, kind of stuff......and he said it was cool to meet, and we stood up, shook hands, and i think i walked back to the house and quit that job.

it felt ridiculous, and i knew i had to change my life, because we had a kid coming, and so began the long process of pulling myself out of that existence into the current one.

now, seven and a half years later, i've gotten the book deal, have started having success as an artist and filmmaker, or, at least some recognition from my peers, and toured the country endlessly. now there's just the music thing to have a go at properly..........

but there's a price to pay for everything, and i'm not here without one........

anyway, listening to Frankie Sparo's song "city as it might have been" brings me back to those early struggling days of madness, hunger and such.......it's not nostalgia, because that's a dead horse, but it brings me back to our little apartment we had on the corner of 2nd and st. paul, and in many ways that was a beautiful, perfect time.......simple and clean.........

my ex and i were madly in love, and felt really united against the world, the system and the man........we had no phone, no teevee, no internet and were in this rare time in our lives where we were both super clean, straight edge, and shared ideas and moved in the same direction. it's strange the people you meet, and how many have come and gone in our lives........so many people i knew are no longer a part of my life, it's strange..........

alas, this semi golden era wasn't to last, but it was amazing while it did.......and now all these years later, you can see the mistakes you make, and how you could've avoided them.......well, life is for learning and living, and i keep on keeping on........i miss those times though.......and in many ways, my ex as well.......

but enough of that, just know i'm working on more art and some new songs and will keep on going, so in the meantime, check out some of these photos from the year we were on fire......

i totally remember this sight........it looked as though we had been nuked or something, and i was working directly across the river from that fire......the smoke was incredible.........i'll never forget that smell.......

that was the year my son was born, in the midst of all these fires, turmoil and struggle.......things don't always go as planned, but as long as you have a plan, i think that things will eventually sort themselves out.......

oh, back the music, on a final note, these albums were essential to my mental health and well being because i felt connected in some way, that i wasn't alone in the cosmos and the beauty and haunted sadness of these songs reflected my own in some way......i connected deeply with them and still feel that way, listening to them now takes me back to those days, but in a good way.........

ack! i've been struggling on the art front, trying to come up with something fucking different.......there's plenty of ideas, but put into practice, they fucking suck.....haha! but i'll keep trying......

other news, well, the "Jesus Coyote TeeVee" film is done and heading out into the film festival world land and off to my distributor, Vtape in toronto..........and i've started working on my next film project, which is tentatively titled "Motherfucker Redeemer....."

and i've got about 8 or 9 brand spanking new songs with rough vocal sketches for you my sweethearts the drunkards in the audiences........

i'll work on them over the next few months.....polish them, spit on them, fight with them, get pissed with them and then maybe release them.......unlike the spoken word album i did back in 2009 and didn't release, lost the originals and now am fucked.......learn learn learn.......

there's always something fucking going on and i'm always fucking busy and why the fuck am i fucking swearing so much?

i'm not sure, i'm probably fucking pissed off about something, and goddamnit if i can't properly swear now and then, what the fuck?

ahaha!

a vancouver island carver was shot FIVE times by a seattle cop.....while the carver was VISIBLY carrying a block of wood and his carving knife.......

harshness.....

needless to say, the stupid drama i've been enduring elsewhere in my life really means shit, and i'm happy to be alive, and all i can do is the best i can do. screw the rest.

hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

i'm feeling a bit blue, which is the reason why i re-posted that song and video......the short winter song from 2 years ago on this very blog.

haven't slept much tonight, a few hours maybe, and i've decided to sit up and drink tea and look through old photos, and feel, i dunno, a mixture of haunted, sadness and torn up bits of confusion. i miss my kids something fierce, and can't help but wonder if i'm making the right decisions in life. i keep being all mumbly joe about the past and what haunts us, because i can't seem to shake this feeling that i've left them for an education in the world. their mum and i are probably beyond redemption, and resolution, and it's quite sad. so, i keep pushing on in life, and hoping for the best, and that in some way i'm kicking open doors for my kids to follow, but there's no guarantee right? sigh, it all feels a bit mis-directed at four in the morning and you're feeling low. sigh, i guess for the moment, i'll have to soldier on and keep moving.

i reckon i'll figure it out.

in the meantime, looking at all the photos, especially the past two years, my god, all the places and faces, the highs and the lows.......maybe i'm supposed to keep moving, and that's just the reality of it?

in the meantime, have a look at some photos and i'll see you down the road i'm sure......

i don't mean to cannibalize my own art, but I've been thinking about this particular film i made over two years ago.

there are many, many moments over the past several years i can't recall, jam sessions, creating a piece of art, writing a poem, or whatever, simply because i've been on the road so long. think of it like living in dog years. but this one evening walk i took and the photos from that night have been haunting me for some time. perhaps it's the music, perhaps it's the lonely streets from that night. i don't quite know, but it's been bugging me a lot lately, so i thought i'd find it and repost a link to it so you too can experience it.

it was a transitional time in my life, i was going through a lot of relationship and emotional stuff, spending a lot of time on the road, but on design, not driven by anything else. there is a heavy price to pay for really going after what you want in life, and that price is usually paid by the ones around you first, and then finally, yourself.
