re: 1st of three articles i've written this year.

hello friends, fans, foe and hustlers,

been awhile, i've been busy, looking for work, hustling, slinging, doing my best to keep my head above the water. i've written three articles this year so far. low numbers to be sure. but i'm going to post them for your reading and viewing pleasure!

enjoy!?

CB

It started like this: recently i was approached by a local newspaper about graffiti and taggers. The poor writer didn't know where to start, so i explained it as clearly as possible in as few words as possible. have a read!?

Hi _______,

tell me more about your article.

also, a tagger is not a graffiti artist. there's a world of difference. a tagger is like the first steps to becoming a graffiti artist. a tagger is a vandal. a graffiti artist is just that, an artist that has taken years to develop a style and perfect what they do. kids start out with a "tag" to become known throughout a city.

if they become "citywide" that means people across town know who they are. then if they're serious about it, they start working on a "piece" meaning graff style letters that represent their name. usually it starts out as a "bomb" or "throwie" style letters, the big bubbly style first associated with philadelphia and then new york. after awhile and practice they keep developing their style and become more intricate, gradually moving towards a west coast L.A. style of writing that is nearly illegible to the untrained eye.

this is called "wildstyle," and there's some great graff movies out there on youtube. "kings and toys" which refers to a starting out graff writer as a "toy" and an experienced one as a "king." another great movie is actually called "wildstyle" and documents the explosion of this gnarly style of graffiti art at it's epicentre of venice beach, california. there is a hugely successful group of "writers" from l.a. called "the seventh letter," google them. they've got a fashion brand and crew of writers such as saber, revok, ewok, pose, and many more that form a globally renowned "crew" of writers and streets artists. they are the realm of kings.

then there is "street art" which is the wildly creative trend of people who don't do "letters" but actually create art pieces instead, a totally different genre that features skills and strengths on "characters" which is basically like letters, to full blown art masterpieces such as things done by blu, how and nosm, david choe, dabs and myla banksy, james jean and many more.

there are also awesome street art festivals around the world that feature the work of some of these artists such as the "under pressure" festival here in canada that happens in ottawa and or montreal, nuart festival in stavanger, norway, Fame festival in grottalagie, italy, pow wow! in honalulu, hawaii, Art basel in miami, and many more around the world. i myself have been pretty fortunate to be invited and have painted across canada doing "street art," from victoria, vancouver, kamloops, kelowna, penticton, vernon, grand forks, calgary, prince albert, regina, brandon manitoba, winnipeg, toronto, sault st. marie, hamilton, ottawa, hull and montreal.

so, to get from being a "toy" to a "king" takes many years of dedicated practice drawing out your name, developing your style and then many hundreds if not thousands of dollars. the average graffiti piece in terms of "letters" can be between $50 to $150 you see on a train or a wall, and a street art mural even more. cans of paint are not the crap "civilians" paint with, such as krylon or rustoleum, that's from the 1980's, because there is now a global market on graffiti art with companies started by graffiti artists and writers that create acrylic based, high pigment colours paint starting about $6 on the low side per can to upwards of $10 and $12 a can of 400 or 500ml paint. there are also low and high pressure cans for different paint styles, as well as a plethora of "caps" meaning the paint nozzles used. belton, montana, kobra, ironlak and more are some of the major global companies that make spray cans specifically for street art.

at any given time i'd guess kamloops has about 50 to 100 taggers, the most active age is probably grade 9 to 11 and then they usually stop. these are disenfranchised kids who feel they have no voice or power and tagging represents that. it's a way for them to rebel. to get known. to feel something in a society they don't feel included in. when they go beyond that and get into creating "pieces" meaning larger scale graffiti art or words, it takes maturity and practice and money. doing street art isn't cheap. so, as for practicing street artists in the loops, i'd say there's less than 20. most people stop once they hit their 20's or they move on in life to other communities.

to me, kamloops needs what are known as "free walls," and major cities in canada have them, they provide safe, creative opportunities for youth to express themselves on large walls on created spaces or abandoned buildings or whatever. here in kamloops, if you want to graffiti art, you have to risk your life. walls are few and far between and involve finding a space to paint that is abandoned, unsafe and populated by homeless people, drug addicts and more. i've painted at places where you have to deal with homeless people that are sketched out and have mental health issues, addiction issues, alcohol issues and can be violently aggressive towards anyone. then there are broken bottles, needles, crack pipes strewn about that you have to be careful about. all just to paint peacefully on a wall in a place no one will ever see, but it's fun and relaxing once you get past all the other madness.

i had a graffiti art show last year in kelowna at the alternator centre for creative art and part of the exhibition was showing that side of street art, the stuff you have to deal with just to paint. a free wall would be a safe place for youth to showcase their skills and talent without risking their lives. but it probably won't happen until the kid or grandchild of a city councillor or mayor gets hurt, then it'll become a priority. god i'm jaded. haha. ottawa has a massive legal wall. ottawa. think about that. haha.

does that help?

if you have anymore questions contact me, i'm about to start a mural at the kamloops aboriginal friendship centre next week! i've got a couple others ones in town, one at the emerald centre downtown, the former rendezvous hotel, and behind Kamloops Immigrant Services on the north shore, that one is massive, i think 125 feet wide!

cheers,
cb.

re: the adventure continues..............

Hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

here are a couple panorama's from my mum's house. as you can see the sun and son were rising that morning, i got up and out to take some photos. rez life is a different life. i've spent nearly half of this year back on the reserve, the longest amount of time in years. i learned a lot and it was both good and not so good. right now the cherries are ready, we got tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, potatoes, raspberries, black berries, red currents, peach trees and more planted this spring.

it was a lot of hard work, but it'll be worth it, we only lost 2 raspberry plants, they were pretty small and didn't survive the transplanting, but the other 20 or so did and are 3 feet tall already. i love fresh raspberries and in the coming years we'll have plenty! reconnecting to the reserve and everyone on it has been pretty cool. overall a positive learning experience this year and i'd do it again. i mean, i'll always be connected to our land and people, but having the opportunity to work for the band and live on reserve is something i'd consider.

there are sacrifices, it wasn't easy, the winter was filled with short days, grey skies and melancholy, but i survived, my mum has a sun lamp so i was turning it on every day. once spring started and the days were getting longer, it was such a relief! in march i was literally ecstatic about the days getting longer, practically jumping up and down over it. i'd sit outside more and breathe in the air. plants coming to life, the earth waking up, it was awesome.

our seasons seem to be changing faster here in the southern interior, i distinctly remember 4 different seasons, now it seems to be a 5 month winter of grey and cold, a month of spring and then blistering hot summers that are dry and full of smoke from the multitude of wildfires raging across western canada and the united states (we get a lot of smoke from the great basin in washington state, it's climate is a lot like the southern interiors, a continuation of it, and huge fires.) and then it's october and winter starts again. it's crazy weather days and it shows no sign of stopping, and that's something i've noticed in my lifetime, i can't imagine what my kids will have to deal with in theirs. damn.

in the meantime, i've started writing a super natural thriller based on my time here and it will have the Nlaka'pamux language featured in it as well, lot's of it! time to forge new literary genre's, "aboriginal horror." what do you think?

until next time lovers,

CB.

re: sour notes and everything in between.....

Hello lovers, friends, fan and foe,

day 5 in changing my attitude and lifestyle, time to get healthy, happy and strong again. it's funny, people can say they're doing fine, i did for ages, but really things aren't always that way. for myself, i've been packing around too much baggage the past few years, it was unhealthy and i was very unhappy. but if you'd have asked, i would've said, "i'm fine, good, thanks." but really i wasn't. these days i truly feel good and although it's early in my changes, i know what i have to do, and from there on the goals will change and new ideas, new creative projects, new collaborations and many new things will come from this and i know it will. positive attracts positive, negative attracts negative in terms of human mental, physical and emotional conditions, at least for me it did. haha.

in the meantime, i'm playing guitar like mad again, recording riffs and ideas, working on a 58 page colouring book for grown ups or those that never grew up, haha, and writing new poems and a new work of fiction, a short story, a super natural aboriginal thriller!!!! some of it is even in the Nlaka'pamux language!!!

hope all is well in your world, be brave, be strong! challenge the normative of existence and yourself.
or don't. whatever makes you happy. haha.

re: new writing.....and changes in my life.......

Hello lovers, friends, fans and foe......

i'm getting my act together, as they say, changing things in my life that sucked and getting rid of some more old baggage i've been packing for too long. getting over things. getting back to my happy place.

been a bit of a miserable bastard for awhile, not happy and not enjoying life. finally last weekend i hit the wall, had a bit of a meltdown and realized i need to change, to get back to who i used to be, and to get healthy again. i'm chipping away at things.

creativity helps me a lot, and i've been writing quite a bit lately. working on a thriller, a super natural story about spence's bridge and my people. it'll be cool. i'm about half way through it. as well i've been writing some poetry and it feels good to get creative again.

it's easy to get into a rut, or a negative space or cycle and just sit there or ride in that loop forever and feel sorry for yourself and blame others. it takes courage to stand up instead of sitting there frozen, it takes strength to wade through that miasma of hell, small town ennui and break those cycles and loops you can feel trapped in. that's what i'm doing. accepting my mistakes and moving on, because moping doesn't do anything. in times of darkness and struggle, be brave because each day is a new day to get it right.

until next time lovers,

Chris Bose.

2 New Poems:

The party is over:
It hurts where I used to play
I’ve become invisible
To women of a variety
Of ages
As I let myself go
Here and there
Spilling out of my shirt
And sides
My orgasm sounds have become
My pissing sounds
Whereas a few years ago
I was enjoying the field
Now I enjoy watching
Marathon episodes
Of new comedies or
Action thriller series
I no longer think
About relationships
Or maybe “this one will work”
Or anything like that
I don’t want to share my time
With anyone anymore
Time is precious
I don’t want to learn to deal
with idiosyncrasies
Or live with anyone
Or listen to their bullshit
Or neurosis

No I’m content to putter
About my home
Make art
Play guitar
And parent my children
As I prepare
To enter the third quarter of my life
I’m cool with it.

The road:
I’m tired of it
Tired of being on it
It is no longer is fun
Anymore
I loathe hotels
Airports Cabs
And bus terminals
The smell of an airplane
As you get on
Dry, plastic and fake
Then later
the smell of farts when
Everyone stands up
After you land safely
Everyone squeezing out
A celebratory “I survived” fart
The fart smell of a cab or a bus
The air conditioning
Wheezing away
I’ve noticed
That people no longer
Talk to one another on buses
I think because everyone
Is exhausted and overwhelmed
And overloaded
By life
That and they’re endlessly
On smart phones, tablets
And other technology

Whereas people on planes
Still chat each other up
Probably because of some
Base fear of dying alone
In a plane crash

I do like being in fancy hotels
And looking like I don’t belong
Sitting there in my paint covered
Clothes
Tired, grubby looking
And worn out
Sometimes I’ll get asked if I’m staying
There to which I’ll reply
“No, but can I just stay in the lobby
for like five more hours?”
and security is called
and then I produce my key card
and identification which is verified
at the front desk
and the person or person who complained
look all confused and angry
while I smile and laugh
savouring that feeling
like I’ve created a new way
to hurt someone’s feelings
nom nom nom nom
it feeds me
being able to be in a confrontation
where I know I’m totally right
and there’s nothing they can do

about it.

re: the age of magic.

Hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

i stumbled upon these vintage magic posters and loved them. from the "golden age" of magic, late 1800's? cool symbolism and occultist vibes. now there's no magic anymore.

agree?

re: time keeps on slipping.....

Hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

i'm trying to update my blog more. trying to anyway. so, these photos are in two places, one is spences bridge, bc, on the Kumcheen I.R. 1, looking east doing a panorama. i love doing panoramas now for some reason. probably because it's the newest toy i've found.

This photo is of the confluence of the Nicola River, or Nkemci'n River
meeting the Thompson River.
Way back in history, probably the mid 1800's, before the trains plowed
through the valley, there were 2 villages, one on each side of the Nkemci'm
and this place was a significant gathering place where we'd feast, have the
first salmon of the new year, have inter-tribal meetings and agreements
between other nations, have games and all sorts of things.

Either a rattlesnake or a gopher snake, depending on how you view
the patterns, about 3 and a half feet long and this was in
Peterson Creek, Kamloops.

re: traditional foods

Hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

here are some plants from my territory that are ready or are winding down right now, asparagus, non-native, used by europeans for keeping ditches from collapsing and so on. and ceweta, or indian celery, which is pretty good, but strong flavoured.

also i've included Skupen or bitter root, which is cleaned and dried, celery seeds you can use in tea, actually you can use both in tea, but it'll clean you out! haha. and then some canned salmon. the salmon run numbers are lower and lower every year in the thompson river, we actually only fished for 2 weeks last year. i only went line casting and got a few for the winter. not like the old days.

anyways,

until next time lover,

cb

re: breaking bad lands.

Hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

here are some images from Kumcheen I.R.1 in Spences Bridge, BC. i took these a few weeks ago on a beautiful april day.

it's hot there, back in the day our people would have been up in the mountains and come down to fish in the morning or at dusk. in the valley mountain tops we'd have been gathering and hunting, getting ready for winter.

but the land in these photos has remained virtually unchanged since the last ice age. crazy eh?

re: Nlaka'pamux culture and language

Greetings friends, fans, foe and lovers,

it's april, it's beautiful out, the winter is pretty much over! the days are getting longer, and the long dark winter nights are but a bitter memory. for today's post, i'm sharing some photos of traditional Nlaka'pamux cultural items. a chief's head dress, some weaving and basketry and a fish net. our people were pretty ingenious, and where here for thousands of years. we're only finding remains older than a few hundred purely by accident! a few years ago we put in a new water treatment system, finally, and accidentally uncovered the remains of a man and a boy.

both were ceremonially buried, covered in ochre powder, and sent to the spirit world with a salmon and dried berries and other items such as a pipe and buckskin clothes. they were estimated to be 2000 years old and only discovered by accident when digging for the pipes for the water system. we were in tune with the environment and lived here for thousands of years without disrupting it, unlike today, look at the world around us.

i look at cultural items differently now, with reverence, because i'm learning how these things were made, all by hand and made to last and be shared. indian hemp was a tall plant, that frayed and was turned into rope, clothes, netting and whatever else was needed. the weaving and basketry could be used for cooking, holding water, cups, and lasted for years. but when it outlived it's purpose, it could be tossed away and return to the land because it was from the land. i think that's what made it easier for colonizers to feel no pity and i'm reading documents and books from the mid to late 1800's and they considered us "backwards" and having no culture. everything was oral culture, passed down in stories and songs, everything we made returned to the land from what it was made.

our houses were pithouses and teepees, and you probably drive by entire villages and don't even know it. whenever they build a highway or add on to train tracks they inevitably stumble across remains of a village, or people. the old "historical" documents i read are just brutal, racist, condescending and tragic. they justified trying to wipe us out and the wholesale pillaging and exploitation of our land. it is no wonder things are such a mess these days and our people are still here through it all, reclaiming the land, the language and the culture one day at a time.

until next time,

Chris Bose.
ps: i'm also working on language videos for the Cook's Ferry Indian Band they can be found here:
