re: 1st of three articles i've written this year.

hello friends, fans, foe and hustlers,

been awhile, i've been busy, looking for work, hustling, slinging, doing my best to keep my head above the water. i've written three articles this year so far. low numbers to be sure. but i'm going to post them for your reading and viewing pleasure!

enjoy!?

CB

It started like this: recently i was approached by a local newspaper about graffiti and taggers. The poor writer didn't know where to start, so i explained it as clearly as possible in as few words as possible. have a read!?

Hi _______,

tell me more about your article.

also, a tagger is not a graffiti artist. there's a world of difference. a tagger is like the first steps to becoming a graffiti artist. a tagger is a vandal. a graffiti artist is just that, an artist that has taken years to develop a style and perfect what they do. kids start out with a "tag" to become known throughout a city.

if they become "citywide" that means people across town know who they are. then if they're serious about it, they start working on a "piece" meaning graff style letters that represent their name. usually it starts out as a "bomb" or "throwie" style letters, the big bubbly style first associated with philadelphia and then new york. after awhile and practice they keep developing their style and become more intricate, gradually moving towards a west coast L.A. style of writing that is nearly illegible to the untrained eye.

this is called "wildstyle," and there's some great graff movies out there on youtube. "kings and toys" which refers to a starting out graff writer as a "toy" and an experienced one as a "king." another great movie is actually called "wildstyle" and documents the explosion of this gnarly style of graffiti art at it's epicentre of venice beach, california. there is a hugely successful group of "writers" from l.a. called "the seventh letter," google them. they've got a fashion brand and crew of writers such as saber, revok, ewok, pose, and many more that form a globally renowned "crew" of writers and streets artists. they are the realm of kings.

then there is "street art" which is the wildly creative trend of people who don't do "letters" but actually create art pieces instead, a totally different genre that features skills and strengths on "characters" which is basically like letters, to full blown art masterpieces such as things done by blu, how and nosm, david choe, dabs and myla banksy, james jean and many more.

there are also awesome street art festivals around the world that feature the work of some of these artists such as the "under pressure" festival here in canada that happens in ottawa and or montreal, nuart festival in stavanger, norway, Fame festival in grottalagie, italy, pow wow! in honalulu, hawaii, Art basel in miami, and many more around the world. i myself have been pretty fortunate to be invited and have painted across canada doing "street art," from victoria, vancouver, kamloops, kelowna, penticton, vernon, grand forks, calgary, prince albert, regina, brandon manitoba, winnipeg, toronto, sault st. marie, hamilton, ottawa, hull and montreal.

so, to get from being a "toy" to a "king" takes many years of dedicated practice drawing out your name, developing your style and then many hundreds if not thousands of dollars. the average graffiti piece in terms of "letters" can be between $50 to $150 you see on a train or a wall, and a street art mural even more. cans of paint are not the crap "civilians" paint with, such as krylon or rustoleum, that's from the 1980's, because there is now a global market on graffiti art with companies started by graffiti artists and writers that create acrylic based, high pigment colours paint starting about $6 on the low side per can to upwards of $10 and $12 a can of 400 or 500ml paint. there are also low and high pressure cans for different paint styles, as well as a plethora of "caps" meaning the paint nozzles used. belton, montana, kobra, ironlak and more are some of the major global companies that make spray cans specifically for street art.

at any given time i'd guess kamloops has about 50 to 100 taggers, the most active age is probably grade 9 to 11 and then they usually stop. these are disenfranchised kids who feel they have no voice or power and tagging represents that. it's a way for them to rebel. to get known. to feel something in a society they don't feel included in. when they go beyond that and get into creating "pieces" meaning larger scale graffiti art or words, it takes maturity and practice and money. doing street art isn't cheap. so, as for practicing street artists in the loops, i'd say there's less than 20. most people stop once they hit their 20's or they move on in life to other communities.

to me, kamloops needs what are known as "free walls," and major cities in canada have them, they provide safe, creative opportunities for youth to express themselves on large walls on created spaces or abandoned buildings or whatever. here in kamloops, if you want to graffiti art, you have to risk your life. walls are few and far between and involve finding a space to paint that is abandoned, unsafe and populated by homeless people, drug addicts and more. i've painted at places where you have to deal with homeless people that are sketched out and have mental health issues, addiction issues, alcohol issues and can be violently aggressive towards anyone. then there are broken bottles, needles, crack pipes strewn about that you have to be careful about. all just to paint peacefully on a wall in a place no one will ever see, but it's fun and relaxing once you get past all the other madness.

i had a graffiti art show last year in kelowna at the alternator centre for creative art and part of the exhibition was showing that side of street art, the stuff you have to deal with just to paint. a free wall would be a safe place for youth to showcase their skills and talent without risking their lives. but it probably won't happen until the kid or grandchild of a city councillor or mayor gets hurt, then it'll become a priority. god i'm jaded. haha. ottawa has a massive legal wall. ottawa. think about that. haha.

does that help?

if you have anymore questions contact me, i'm about to start a mural at the kamloops aboriginal friendship centre next week! i've got a couple others ones in town, one at the emerald centre downtown, the former rendezvous hotel, and behind Kamloops Immigrant Services on the north shore, that one is massive, i think 125 feet wide!

cheers,
cb.

re: acoustic guitar time........

hello friends, family, foe and lovers,

it's been awhile, i think i'm going through some inner turmoil, aka, midlife crisis. haha. i've spent the past ten years on the road, and lost more than i gained. it's not worth it to me anymore. i need to seriously re-evaluate my life goals. the future isn't lost, it's just sort out of focus, hahaha. don't get me wrong, i had my share of good times on the road, more than bad, but still, at the end of the day you have to weigh whether or not it was worth it. i'm contemplating life and accomplishments right now and sorting out what my next steps are in life.

hopefully all is going according to plan for you,

all the beast,

cb
ps: new video i made one morning this week, just to let you know i'm alive and kicking!!!

re: a clear day

hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

we're on a clear day, the skies are vast and wide, the air is crisp and clean, and i've already gone for a brisk walk before the beautiful light hit the rest of the sleeping people.

i'll try to get out and make the most of my day, i hope you do as well. i've been wondering lately or perhaps for years, what i might have been in a past life. likely someone who was on the sea. i feel landlocked and love being near the sea.

what about you?

in the meantime, here's some more art. get out there, make the most of your day. who knows when the last one is around the corner?

until another time,

re: day 3 song of the 5 day song challenge!!!

hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

it's day 3 of the 5 day song challenge it's safe to say i'm kicking it's ass. haha.
so, here's the 3rd song and video, and i don't really plan this out, it just comes together.
i woke up this morning at 5:30, made some tea and picked up a guitar and played this riff. it's an old one, i wrote it about 20 years ago, but it hasn't found a home yet. maybe now it has, it's kind of somber, kind of beautiful, kind of introspective and relaxing. when i added the video, i started dropping in travel stuff from across canada. being an artist/musician/author and filmmaker in a small town means you have to travel A LOT!!!

traveling takes it's toll, you miss loved ones, your home, your bed, and so on. but it is also awesome, and exciting, you meet new people, see new places, learn new things and it's good for the soul. it's a cruel catch 22. when you're on the road too long, you miss home and everything about it, but when you're home, after a few days you can start climbing the walls wanting to be back out on the road. perhaps they'll never reconcile themselves. haha, and i'm okay with that, i crave new adventures and stories, so i'm sure i'll never stop as long as i can.

anyway, peace out, stay tuned for tomorrow's song and video!!

cheers,

cb

re: death and being good.

Hello lovers,

it's been awhile, and oh how i've missed you. let me explain i wasn't ignoring you but rather the world and you are part of that phenomena. ah death, that concubine whore, that star fucker, that satyr, that door we are all going to walk through one day. yes, think about it. one day you are going to die. i am going to die. everyone we love and hate dearly are going to die. why be born then? why all this fuss? and what lays beyond the temple of death? no one really knows, but i'll tell you one thing. i believe in ghosts.

last night i had a visitor, it woke me up at around 1:30 am. i thought i heard one of my kids call out, and having crashed out on the couch watching "american dad" episodes, i jumped up and groggily stumbled down the hall to their bedrooms. first the girls, soundly asleep and snoring gently, and then my son, who was cocooned up in his favourite blanket also snoring soundly. then i heard strange sounds. like barefoot footsteps on the floor in the hall, so i jumped out, and then heard rustling sounds and other strange noises around my apartment. i opened the door to the storage room and look around, nothing, then the hall closets and finally went into the kitchen and finally the living room. nothing.

"Fuck it," i thought to myself and went back to the couch and decided to play some guitar, so i plugged in a guitar and picked up my handy zoom recorder and over the space of an hour, laid down some sweet riffs. basically the skeletons to 4 new songs. riffy and melodic, fast and heavy. simple and understated. my favourite way. haha. but as i played and got lost in the groove, every now and then i'd hear a voice, a soft one, and footsteps and rustling sounds, like someone flicking the pages of a book, but i figured i had a visitor, and the kids were safe, so to hell with it. i'll shut up and play my guitar.

finally i crashed around 3 a.m. this morning and woke up sharply at 6 a.m. and felt fine. refreshed. so i started the ritual of getting my kids' lunch together. i will say i did a quick sweep of the house again with a flashlight to make sure everything was good. it was, and i made my coffee and thought about this blog, this life, and you.

and the passing of phillip seymour hoffman.

such a shame. he was a great actor, truly, because he could inhabit the spirit and soul of a character so thoroughly that he moved from film to film, role to role with what appeared to be natural born ease. leading men, a dime a dozen and hollow headed to boot, can only be the good guy. rarely do we get a complex good guy with an ugly core. it just doesn't happen. good guys have too much to lose, their looks, their wealth and their ladies, or men in the rare instance. haha.

ultimately, residing in the shadows takes its toll, this much i do know. i took a year break from digital art, my bread and butter, and dived whole heartedly into graffiti art, drawing, painting photography and just living in the sunshine again instead of living in the shadows as i have for the past 6 or more years. more importantly, i took a break from making art and writing about the residential schools, racism and trauma it has caused and created in my family and life. i had spent the better part of 5 years making films, art and writing about it all and it was killing me inside.

but i was hollow, and there was pressure to create new shows, new art, new poems, new stories and films to go along with it, and after awhile it all became counter productive and i knew if i didn't stop i was going to die. so i stopped, and began living again, not in a wind-bag, bullshit kind of way, but i started doing graffiti and street art and drawing in sketchbooks and doing workshops with youth and painting outside in the sun, in the rain, in the cold and the warmth. it was social, i met other artists and writers, it was and remains a positive force in my life. art crimes. hahah.

a day painting with my friends is like a day fishing, we draw, paint and bullshit about art, life, women, music and everything. suddenly it wasn't just me rotting away in my mind in a lonely apartment, missing my kids and wondering what the hell i was doing with my life. don't get me wrong, i'm no saint, but i do know what's good in my life and i work hard to protect it each day.

until next time lovers,

cb.

re: photo time.

hello lovers,

time for some photos. i've got a wanderlust. lustful wander. wandering lustfully. etc.

haha. i travel and make art, curate shows, make films, do presentations, readings, and workshops for a living. it only took two decades to get here, but i'm having fun now that i am. as well, i was meditating on my digital art the past couple days and have definitely noticed i'm much happier since i'm taking a break from it. it is something i do love to work with creatively, but definitely i feel better as an artist taking risks, branching out and expanding my creative repertoire by working with sometimes massive mural pieces and just painting and drawing again on a daily basis.

i've also opted to not work 24/7 and have chosen a regular work week, monday to friday, nine to five. it's weird and taking some getting used to, instead of endlessly toiling on stuff and getting burnt out and losing my mind. we'll see how it goes, i'm sure i'll end up slipping and find myself working until 1 am like i did last night. haha.

in the meantime, here's some photos i've taken the past couple months. i'll be posting for the next few days. places i've been, people i've seen, etc. some artfully done shots of death. haha. despite changing mediums, the messages stay the same. iconography, monsters, death, fire. haha.

cheers, thanks for coming!

re: nicotine, valium, vicodine, marijuana, ecstasy, and alcohol.

hello lovers,

i'm listening to "queens of the stone age." and love it.

so, at the arbour HQ we've got some big ideas coming in the next few years. mind blasting. hopefully we'll get support and rally people around to help really create a creative music, literary and arts scene here in the loops. a place where people don't exodus like mad, but rather come and do a sabbatical, a creative time to rejuvenate and make new works.

anyways, we'll get to that soon enough.

i love the desert sessions. check them out in the link above.

and check the photos of the loops i took on the rez with the gopro hd. fucking amazing camera.

re: title required. or whatever.

hello lovers,

so, when you arrive at vancouver international airport, you are greeted by these beautiful panels. nice eh!? i don't know who did them, but i will find out!

sitting at the airport during layovers.
inevitably, when you cross the country, you are going to get
layovers. with air canada, you're in vancouver
with westjet, you're in calgary.
i actually prefer westjet, the crews are nicer
the jets are bigger
and the trip is smoother.

re: morbid melancholia....

hello freaks, fans, foe, lovers, sinners and winners,

i bring you morbid melancholia.

the weather has been weird. extreme grey, dull days, which are followed by insanely bright sunny days that are full of wind that blows the dust around town even harder, reminding us or perhaps asking us, what are we doing in a city on the edge of forever and nowhere?

what do you think? where are you living? how does it treat you? how has your winter been if you've had one?

until next time lovers,

re: desert city queen.....

hello friends, fans, foe, lovers and leavers,

i bring you the desert city queen.

the other night some friends passed through town and some hijinks ensued. it was great fun.
but what it really did was remind me i'm somewhat isolated up here in the interior of b.c.

the night life consisted of running a gamut of crackheads and meth junkies between the three or four pubs that were open. 2 of which were total dives. haha.

and still, everything closed at 1 a.m.

i'm not part of the young, hipster art crowd, most of which is university driven of course, in fact i'm quite sure if i showed up at some hipster art gathering, arguably, they'd wonder whose dad i was! haha. and the rest of the various art cliques in this city, i am also not a part of, so where does that leave me you might wonder? usually at home making art! haha! which is more fun anyway.

i also watch "vice guide" on youtube, which is hilarious. vice was a magazine that came to prominence in the 1990's and was the cool magazine people loved because it was free. well, they're still around, and probably stronger than ever, and have their own youtube channel, which is chock full of hilarious and informative things. check it out. it's what helps keep me sane in this dust blown somewhat very redneck town while waiting for my kids to get older so we can leave. haha.

also, i curate art shows and work to build up the Arbour Collective, the group i co-founded with Nacoma George. we're really kicking ass and working hard to create our own arts and media centre here in kamloops, bc. and help represent urban aboriginal people with art shows, festivals, workshops and the like. why? because no one else is doing it.

there are many more reasons, but for now, i've got to go and pick up the art book/catalogue (i designed and worked on forever) from the printers. will post pictures and if you want a copy, private message me and i'll send you one.

until next time lovers,

CB

hello friends, family, foe, lovers, leavers, sinners and winners,

re: chris bose cards.

hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

i bring you two chris bose cards. decide which is your favourite and do let me know.

this chris bose, is my great, great grand father. i might have missed a great in there. anyway, he died in belgium in 1916 after surviving about 7 months in world war I. his monthly salary was $15. to join the army he had to surrender his rights as an aboriginal person in canada. no title. no land. no language. no culture. just to die for queen and country. i'm sure he thought it was important and he was making a difference somehow. i often wonder what this young, brave man would think of his great, great grandson chris bose. me.

until next time lovers,

chris bose III.

re: this is my dedication......

hello fiends, fans, foe, lovers, haters, winners and sinners,

hope your journey through this strange life is boding well for you. it's 5:30 in the morning and i've been up for about half an hour. hitting my second cup of coffee and listening to the "Cancer Bats." you know it's going to be a good day when you wake up and want strong java and heavy metal. haha.

anyways, all my life i've been pushing buttons, pushing people too far, pushing life too far, and pushing boundaries further and further. it's done me right. not all the time, but the positive far outweigh the negative, so onward and upward. must keep making art and music and writing and new films. i've come to the conclusion that not all people are made for this particular road i'm on and i shouldn't be so damn enthusiastic to try to get them on it. trailblazing ain't easy.

the road beckons and sometimes as much as i hate being away, when i'm home too long i start to get a little crazy. haha. you miss home when you're gone and you miss the road when you're home. it's some weird malady that has no cure. perhaps this is the bug, the gene, the crave that drove humanity to expand it's boundaries and knowledge. usually i'm not back on the road until march sometime, but i've got a few gigs already lined up so i'm going to hit it. in this business, you don't make money sitting around at home. hustle up baby.

This is a sign from the road, you know you think you've made it when you're teaching what you love to do and it's being accepted by mainstream society. haha!

Looking North close to my house, here in Kamloops, BC.

Looking South, and across town from my place.

I've been through a lot in my life, and survive hell, heaven and everything in between, day in and day out. finally making peace with a lot of things and moving on, life is short and precious and i need to get a lot done.

Nice shot eh?

Oh, and i met this smoking hot chick.

Well lovers, until next time, dig in and enjoy! The road beckons and i'm gonna hit it!

cheers,

re: the ace of spades.......

hello winners, sinners, lovers and losers,

a short commercial break to promote my book, "The Apology," which came out last year and was published by the Unit/Pitt Gallery in Vancity, in conjunction with an exhibition i had called, you guessed, "The Apology." It is a book of poetry juxtaposed with the Indian Act and the actual apology by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to the First Nations, Inuit and Metis people of Canada for the horrors of the Residential School and Colonialism.

He's been working diligently ever since to exterminate us. So, here's a book about it. It's $15 and i could use the cash lovers, so buy one for yourself and your friends. contact me via my email: chrisbose1@yahoo.ca
