re: 1st of three articles i've written this year.

hello friends, fans, foe and hustlers,

been awhile, i've been busy, looking for work, hustling, slinging, doing my best to keep my head above the water. i've written three articles this year so far. low numbers to be sure. but i'm going to post them for your reading and viewing pleasure!

enjoy!?

CB

It started like this: recently i was approached by a local newspaper about graffiti and taggers. The poor writer didn't know where to start, so i explained it as clearly as possible in as few words as possible. have a read!?

Hi _______,

tell me more about your article.

also, a tagger is not a graffiti artist. there's a world of difference. a tagger is like the first steps to becoming a graffiti artist. a tagger is a vandal. a graffiti artist is just that, an artist that has taken years to develop a style and perfect what they do. kids start out with a "tag" to become known throughout a city.

if they become "citywide" that means people across town know who they are. then if they're serious about it, they start working on a "piece" meaning graff style letters that represent their name. usually it starts out as a "bomb" or "throwie" style letters, the big bubbly style first associated with philadelphia and then new york. after awhile and practice they keep developing their style and become more intricate, gradually moving towards a west coast L.A. style of writing that is nearly illegible to the untrained eye.

this is called "wildstyle," and there's some great graff movies out there on youtube. "kings and toys" which refers to a starting out graff writer as a "toy" and an experienced one as a "king." another great movie is actually called "wildstyle" and documents the explosion of this gnarly style of graffiti art at it's epicentre of venice beach, california. there is a hugely successful group of "writers" from l.a. called "the seventh letter," google them. they've got a fashion brand and crew of writers such as saber, revok, ewok, pose, and many more that form a globally renowned "crew" of writers and streets artists. they are the realm of kings.

then there is "street art" which is the wildly creative trend of people who don't do "letters" but actually create art pieces instead, a totally different genre that features skills and strengths on "characters" which is basically like letters, to full blown art masterpieces such as things done by blu, how and nosm, david choe, dabs and myla banksy, james jean and many more.

there are also awesome street art festivals around the world that feature the work of some of these artists such as the "under pressure" festival here in canada that happens in ottawa and or montreal, nuart festival in stavanger, norway, Fame festival in grottalagie, italy, pow wow! in honalulu, hawaii, Art basel in miami, and many more around the world. i myself have been pretty fortunate to be invited and have painted across canada doing "street art," from victoria, vancouver, kamloops, kelowna, penticton, vernon, grand forks, calgary, prince albert, regina, brandon manitoba, winnipeg, toronto, sault st. marie, hamilton, ottawa, hull and montreal.

so, to get from being a "toy" to a "king" takes many years of dedicated practice drawing out your name, developing your style and then many hundreds if not thousands of dollars. the average graffiti piece in terms of "letters" can be between $50 to $150 you see on a train or a wall, and a street art mural even more. cans of paint are not the crap "civilians" paint with, such as krylon or rustoleum, that's from the 1980's, because there is now a global market on graffiti art with companies started by graffiti artists and writers that create acrylic based, high pigment colours paint starting about $6 on the low side per can to upwards of $10 and $12 a can of 400 or 500ml paint. there are also low and high pressure cans for different paint styles, as well as a plethora of "caps" meaning the paint nozzles used. belton, montana, kobra, ironlak and more are some of the major global companies that make spray cans specifically for street art.

at any given time i'd guess kamloops has about 50 to 100 taggers, the most active age is probably grade 9 to 11 and then they usually stop. these are disenfranchised kids who feel they have no voice or power and tagging represents that. it's a way for them to rebel. to get known. to feel something in a society they don't feel included in. when they go beyond that and get into creating "pieces" meaning larger scale graffiti art or words, it takes maturity and practice and money. doing street art isn't cheap. so, as for practicing street artists in the loops, i'd say there's less than 20. most people stop once they hit their 20's or they move on in life to other communities.

to me, kamloops needs what are known as "free walls," and major cities in canada have them, they provide safe, creative opportunities for youth to express themselves on large walls on created spaces or abandoned buildings or whatever. here in kamloops, if you want to graffiti art, you have to risk your life. walls are few and far between and involve finding a space to paint that is abandoned, unsafe and populated by homeless people, drug addicts and more. i've painted at places where you have to deal with homeless people that are sketched out and have mental health issues, addiction issues, alcohol issues and can be violently aggressive towards anyone. then there are broken bottles, needles, crack pipes strewn about that you have to be careful about. all just to paint peacefully on a wall in a place no one will ever see, but it's fun and relaxing once you get past all the other madness.

i had a graffiti art show last year in kelowna at the alternator centre for creative art and part of the exhibition was showing that side of street art, the stuff you have to deal with just to paint. a free wall would be a safe place for youth to showcase their skills and talent without risking their lives. but it probably won't happen until the kid or grandchild of a city councillor or mayor gets hurt, then it'll become a priority. god i'm jaded. haha. ottawa has a massive legal wall. ottawa. think about that. haha.

does that help?

if you have anymore questions contact me, i'm about to start a mural at the kamloops aboriginal friendship centre next week! i've got a couple others ones in town, one at the emerald centre downtown, the former rendezvous hotel, and behind Kamloops Immigrant Services on the north shore, that one is massive, i think 125 feet wide!

cheers,
cb.

re: tempus fugit....

hello lovers, friends, fans and foe,

wow, time flies, it's been quite sometime since i've posted anything, again, just wow, i hadn't realized it until i checked. this morning i woke up around 5 am and felt a real calm, a clarity i hadn't felt in some time. i think i've been going through a lot of horrible truths lately, or over the past few years. i'm smack dab in the middle of mid-life, 45 years old and it's been tough. locally i feel long in the tooth, younger bands feel i'm too old to jam with and older bands want to jam out classic tinged rock and so on. i feel some local people are resentful of my so called "success," as an artist, author, musician and filmmaker. i think in some ways, i too was resentful, because i felt so much more was being lost than gained. haha, life is a definite head trip.

i think i've been depressed off and on the past few years, probably starting back in 2010 when i really hit the road hard touring and working my ass off. everything i had been working towards for many, many years was finally coming to fruition and no one seemed to care. haha. oh well, i laboured through it,  put my head down and charged forward, slogging through it, the highs and the lows, and everything in between. being away from my kids for long periods of time is and will always be tough, friends come and go, life moves on and people live and people die.

i've been transitioning from road life to home life more and more and it's so challenging, you miss the road, the sights, the sounds, the smells, the people, the performances and the stages and so on. you can try really hard to remember things, and tell yourself, "i'll never forget this moment, this rush, the stage, the galleries, the walls you've painted on, the people you're hanging out with, the food you're eating, the smells, the streets, the faces and places," but eventually you do. haha. oh well, just gotta get out and try to get it all back again i guess?

then trying to find a way to make a living matching what you do on the road is next to impossible. you start to get gigs around town and people call you "art star," or "rock star," and accuse you of using your accomplishments or whatever to get gigs. which in some ways is true, it does get you gigs, but you worked hard for them in the first place. haha. then, there is the excesses of the road, they can become a burden as well, out on the road it's a lot of hard living and good times, people expect it and want it, so when you get off the road switching gears is a head trip. but it's necessary otherwise you'll burn out hard and partying and the lifestyle can kill you or destroy you and your creativity. a catch 22. haha. all to just live out your dreams, the many prices you pay for them and so on.

i guess it's all about really trying to find and maintain balance and sanity, eating healthy, working hard and being creative, pushing your boundaries. success is regional, there are definite advantages to living in larger urban centres where there is infrastructure for musicians, artists, authors and filmmakers. when you're out in the rural or rest of canada, it's a pretty tough slog. gear is expensive and hard to come by, printing out art and art supplies are expensive and i usually have to farm it out and do stuff online, venues and affordable, safe rehearsal space are next to impossible to get and so on.

so what am i really saying? i'm not sure, just sharing some truths and experiences i guess, i've had a lot more so called "success," than i ever thought would happen, but i still hunger for more. but time isn't always on a person's side, so i'd go for it while young, and if i didn't have the responsibilities i have now as an adult, life would be different. a lot of people helped me get to where i am today and i am so thankful to them, you know who you are, and i have also burned some bridges along the way, and that's life, we all make mistakes, the trick is not to repeat yourself on them. you gotta keep on moving forward.

last year, i also really started to feel my years of life on the road on my body, i started physically falling apart last year on the road, tooth problems last year in montreal and prince albert, saskatchewan, knee problems, sight problems and so on, there's still more to do, but i'm trying to learn from my mistakes and trying not to make the same ones repetitively. life is definitely short, when i was turning 30 i never, ever thought i'd be still in Kamloops, BC.

i thought i'd be famous by now, haha, silly me, living in montreal, or toronto or new york or paris or los angeles. and i've been to all those places, many times over the past 20 years, and have had a lot of fun and adventures chasing after my dreams, so i guess i'll close this post on a positive note, saying i feel pretty good today, better and not bitter, something i haven't felt in a while i think and i am indeed very, very grateful for the crazy ride it's been so far.......

in the meantime, check out some new art adventures i've been on and keep on keeping on everyone, it all gets better and better,

cheers,

chris bose.
ps: i'm still broke. haha. buy some art.

re: chris bose cards.

hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

i bring you two chris bose cards. decide which is your favourite and do let me know.

this chris bose, is my great, great grand father. i might have missed a great in there. anyway, he died in belgium in 1916 after surviving about 7 months in world war I. his monthly salary was $15. to join the army he had to surrender his rights as an aboriginal person in canada. no title. no land. no language. no culture. just to die for queen and country. i'm sure he thought it was important and he was making a difference somehow. i often wonder what this young, brave man would think of his great, great grandson chris bose. me.

until next time lovers,

chris bose III.

re: one more new piece of a.........art.......

hello sinners, winners, freaks and lovers,

i was going to try to break 250 posts on my blog this year, but realized, that was too goddamn ambitious, and not realistic.

plus, i needed a break, my brain can only handle so much shit and abuse. i've been busting my ass since march of this year on the road, and it ain't easy! sure, some people think being an artist is a piece of cake, sitting in your lonely tower, creating new stuff for the world. but it ain't like that at all. there's about 30,000 km worth of hustle each year that goes into being a "professional" artist and that's a lot of cross country trips and airports and layovers and skybars and workshops and exhibitions and meet and greets and art juries and satanic presentations and festivals and conferences and interviews and whatever over and over again until you really puke your guts out. at least 150 times a year. no shit. really. it's just that simple.

AND THEN, you have to be ON every single fucking time. because god forbid, that if you are not ON that one time, people will totally shit talk you, blacklist you, blackmail you and treat like you are an intestinal parasite. because they are not out there on the road slogging it out like you and don't know what it's like crisscrossing the country like you do to pay the bills on top of everything else you do like being a mentor, a community leader, a father and so on.

anyway, i digress, and what i meant to say, is i've got some more new art for you, and new music coming soon, so enjoy! dig in! feast your eyes!

until next time lovers, sinners, and winners,

cb.

re: kanata day.

hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

a final image for your Kanata day celebrations.

this one is called "the only good NDN is a Dead NDN."

a phrase i heard more than once in my life, granted, not since the 1990's. but still, i heard it more often in my life than i'd like to have heard it.

can you imagine hearing that as a child by your mother's blue collar, working class, spousal beating, alcoholic boyfriends?

re: eye of the beholder......

Hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

beauty is, as they say, whomever they are, beauty is in the eye of the beholder....

bullshit.

we're attracted to beautiful things, objects, people, objectified people and so on.....

anyway, here's some more art before i get all preachy and shit.

re: the goddessesessesesssss

hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

someone asked me i had given up on digital art. go to hell i replied, christ i need a break, and it ain't even a break because i've got a bunch of digital art on the go all the time. can't a guy experiment? haha!

truth is, i needed real time art, as in, "get your hands dirty," art instead of the clean world of digital stuff.

plus, i'm writing, playing music and generally working on a ton of other things. life is good and busy, and it's not even as busy as i want it to be, so there.

funny things happen when you get off the sauce, you rub your eyes, and see a lot of time has passed by in a blur. so, right now, i'm reading lots, writing lots, working on grants, projects, art, film, music and all sorts of good things.

well, all the beast to you then,

cb
